R.I.P. Octavia Saint Laurent

The world is a decidedly less chic place this week with the passing on Monday of the legendary transgendered beauty Octavia Saint Laurent, who won hearts and an honorary place in the pantheon of the fabulous with her star turn in Jennie Livingston’s 1990 voguing documentary, “Paris Is Burning.” Octavia, who later changed her name to Heavenly Angel Octavia Saint Laurent Manolo Blahnik before settling on the more recession-friendly Octavia Saint Laurent Mizrahi, will be remembered for her encyclopedic knowledge of feminine allure and also for having lived a glamorous life worthy of tens across the board. Check out this brief clip of the Paris Is Burning Documentary on Youtube.

Louis Vuitton Joins Twitter

As of May 15th, the world’s leading luxury brand sent its first tweet! Although Louis Vuitton joining the social media space might be not as big of an event for Twitter.com itself - after all it won't be sent from the space or Oprah's studio, it is a big step for the fashion industry embracing the new medium. In fact, this will be Louis Vuitton’s first official presence on any social media site.

What can you expect from LV's tweets? Updates on new product launches, progressive collaborations, exclusive images, celebrity sightings and privileged details from private events. "With this new presence on Twitter, we hope to provide not only additional customer service to our clientele, but also a unique look at all aspects of Louis Vuitton. This new forum will allow us to communicate the extensive characteristics of the brand to a broader group and offer followers an exceptional experience with Louis Vuitton,” said Daniel Lalonde, President and CEO of Louis Vuitton North America.

Designer Spotlight: Borba Margo's Wearable Art

Borba Margo is a collaboration between Brazilian-born Anderson Borba and Swedish-Polish Jessika Margo. Focusing on hand-crafted accessories, usually made from leather, metal and fabrics, the duo aims to "find freshness and innovation in our everyday clichés through different angles of observation ... until they mutate into unique and poetic objects." Borba Margo, based in the U.K., is known for 'Multicentric Belts,' which give the illusion of being a number of different belts worn at once. On one belt, a number of different sized and shaped brass buckles have been soldered into clusters giving off the multiple effect (2nd pic). Don't ask me how the belt actually works - it just looks amazingly different. The lovely bag (above) wraps elegantly around the shoulders, like a flowing, cascading scarf. It’s refreshing to see interesting and unique pieces. For more on Borba Margo click here.

If you missed it last night, the long awaited special with the Ice Queen aired last night. I have to say it was very interesting. Anna's a human being, so many designer adore her (they have too, right) and I have to say although she isn't know to be the nicest person on the planet, who else who keep Vogue as the most relevant magazine's in the business. In the interview with Morley Safer you will learned that Anna has a $200,000.00 year clothing allowance and Conde Nest foots the bill for. Also, her strange simliarity to her father and the sunglasses are explained, and get this, she dropped out of school at 16!

Also, here's a link that will give you a tour of the Vogue closet..... Not so fab!!!

Patricia Field Talks Style

Patricia Field is considered one of fashion's greatest visionaries. Surprisingly, Pat Field never intended to be a fashion trendsetter. “I just wanted to start a business,” she recalled of her decision to open a Manhattan-based store in 1971. But her eclectic assortments resonated with consumers and paved the way for her career as a stylist.Thirty-eight years later, Field is still intrigued by the business of fashion.

Calling herself a “little CEO” addressing the “big CEOs,” she engaged FN’s summit audience with an opening-night conversation about her take on the recession, her affinity for footwear and the “Sex and the City” phenomenon. Here are some highlights:

On the “Sex and the City” tipping point:“At the end of the first season of ‘Sex and the City,’ we realized it was generating a lot of buzz, but it was really in the second season that we realized that this show had blown out of the box.”

On how shoes stole the show:“It was me, my team and Sarah Jessica Parker, who is also shoe crazy. She is crazy about every shoe ever created for her to wear — so it became a thing. They didn’t write the show for fashion, but they realized it was the hook and latched on to it.”

On her partnership with Payless ShoeSource: “I love the people — great to work with, calm, down-to-earth. It’s amazing how far we’ve come. We started when [Collective Brands CEO] Matt Rubel brought this team together and I started to do domestic advertising with them. Then, I was nominated for an Oscar [in 2006 for “The Devil Wears Prada”] and got to make my own shoes for the red carpet. [That turned] into a boutique collection [for Payless] that grew and naturally developed.”

On how hot styles turn up in unexpected places: “I’m wearing the [Dior gladiator] shoe that created the storm of trends for the last three years — from Manolo to Louis Vuitton. I put it on Sarah Jessica Parker’s foot in the [‘Sex and the City’] movie and I knew what was going to happen. I had found it in New York before Christmastime — it didn’t get any visibility because it must have been a late delivery or something — and bought it because I loved it. I brought mine in to show her, but it was six months later. So we searched and searched, and we finally found it at the outlets in Westchester County in New York. It became a heavy trend.”

On the next “it” shoe: “I don’t necessarily go trendspotting. I just put things together that I think look nice. But I am getting tired of these heavy shoes. I’m ready for nice, refined shoes. I’m wanting that Halston simplicity. But that’s just a feeling.”

On future aspirations: “I’m not sure. Maybe directing a movie or having a TV show. [I’d like to] move on from the styling thing. So hopefully new things will come along.”
